THE ROAD TO TONGDIRET

Written and Directed by Barth Oshionebo and Nanman Dakahap

Department of Theater, Abuja University, Nigeria

The play performed at Abuja 2000: Education, Leadership and Development in the African World dramatizes sex abuse and sexual harassment as social vices in Nigeria schools. In Africa teenagers have no access to basic information on sex education. Parents and educators do not speak freely about these issues due to cultural barriers.

The play presents social realities in Africa where HIV/AIDS pandemic is raging a devastating war in communities. It is against this background "The Road to Tongdiret" finds its relevance.

The major objective of the drama is an attempt to teach sex education through theater. "Tongdiret" is derived from the Mwaghavul Language, meaning "better living".

Exploring the natural locale of moonlight play typical of the traditional African heritage, the teenage students dramatize their pathetic experience as repentant victims of sex abuse. Above all, the drama invites everyone to live a decent and moral life free from sex abuse.
